Soon these shelves will contain my yarn stash in a tres organized manner. My studio has been in disarray for over a month while Neal worked on them between other projects, and I’m hoping to be caught up enough with grading and writing to settle in on Sunday.
Over the fall, inspired by my clothing purging, I sorted out yarn I decided I was not realistically going to knit. I’m not good at keeping the stash organized, although it is pretty contained. Here’s hoping that between the yarn purge and the new shelving system, I’ll find it easier to stay organized, which really means that I will find it easier to focus on the projects that once seemed beautiful enough to warrant buying yarn. I’ve cut way, way back on impulse yarn buying, and now I want to create with some of the lovely fluff that lives with me.
Ravelry is a fantastic place to store information about projects and yarn, but that requires taking lots of pictures and doing some data entry. Better organization in my studio may just lead to better online organization, which in turn will help me find good projects for the stash.
For now, though, the yarn destined for a particular pattern is bagged in a big zippy (with pattern), and the rest is stored by weight. It’s nice when I want to start a project in fingering to pull out the right bag and play around with what’s in it. I guess even when I’m well organized online, I’ll still want to touch and compare my yarns before committing to using one for a particular project.
How about you? What’s your yarn-storage method entail?
Sounds like you’ve got some good plans and I like the idea of bagging the yarn with the pattern. I use Ravelry to organize my queue and I have some of my yarn photographed and posted there but I fell behind on that and now I don’t know what’s there and what isn’t. Honestly, I’m not sure I care enough to put the time into getting it all on there. I think I know in my head what I have.
Good for you!
I have tubbies full of yarn and denial. One day, I’ll deal with it, but that won’t be today.

My stash is confined to a cedar chest — not too big, not too small. No sense of organization to it at all. I rummage around in the randomness and love every second of discovering forgotten treasures over and over again.
Alas, “yarn” and “organization” seldom appear without the word “not” in my universe. I love your shelves and dream of having a studio someday. Currently my yarn is strewn about in bins, baskets and bags of assorted sizes and materials. The wardrobe meant to house it all is largely inaccessible so often yarn is pulled out, but not put away due to it being a right pain in the ass.
Goodness I’m so impressed with how this came out. It looks amazing! I can’t wait to see it filled with all of your treasures!!!
Your wall will be quite impressive when it’s full of yarn and color! A place that’s visible at all times is great for stash. I only keep the most current, or what yarn will be used next, within view. The rest is in bins, sorted by weight.
I wrangled up the wild yarns on the family room floor today and put them all inside one yarn bag or another. Does that count? YOUR display will be beautiful!
It must be spring fever! I went on a mad knit stash organizing spree a few weeks ago. I frogged all my UFOs and now my yarn lives in this glorious red ottoman. The ottoman is also my coffee table and extra seating. I couldn’t be happier!
