A Contest!

Today is my one-year Ravel-versary, and I want to share the joy with you.  How about a little contest?

Leave me a comment with either 1) a movie that should be on my Netflix queue; 2) a link to a blog you love to read; or 3) your favorite item you have ever crafted (besides your kids…that’s a given, no?)–with a link if applicable.

On Tuesday morning, I’ll randomly select three comments.  The winners will receive either 1) a skein of hand dyed (by me; summer=dyeing for me!) lace weight yarn; 2) a fabu skein of sock yarn; or 3) a sweet tote that I will sew in colors of your choice.

Yay, Ravelry!

ETA:  I’ll close the contest at 10:30 East coast time!

  1. Saw your note on Ravelry – HAPPY RAVEL-VERSARY!
I thought I would leave you a Netflix queue. If you haven’t watched it yet, The Bucket List is definitely tops.
(ps – Happy first anniversary, too – here’s to MANY more)

  2. 😀 happy ravel-versary! i think mine is coming up soon too! 😀
if you havent seen them yet, i suggest you add BOTH national treasure movies too your netflix. or the Taken series… those are my two favorite movie type things going on lately! 😀

  3. Happy Ravel-versary! I haven’t knitted a project I absolutely LOVE yet. Still finding one 🙂 Movies… my favourite all time movie is The Crow. Just the first one, the real one with Brandon Lee. Love is forever 🙂

  4. Do TV series count for Netflix? If so my kids and I are addicted to Heros, if not, my favorite thing so far is probably Monkey Socks!

  5. Who could turn down a contest that involves wonderful handmade goodies from one of my favorite crafters?
    Movie to queue up:
The King of Kong : http://www.billyvssteve.com/
Yes, it’s a real documentary, not a mockumentary. Yes, that actually made it BETTER.

  6. Happy Ravel-versary! Mine is a couple of months off but I can’t imagine life without it!
I’m going to give you a few things from your list. I have been told that my taste in movies is not appreciated by most other people, so I will spare you that.
The blog I love to read most (and do so only for the sheer hilarity of it all) is The “Blog” of “Unnecessary” Quotation Marks. http://quotation-marks.blogspot.com/
It never fails to make me laugh. 🙂
My favorite craft project is Butterfly Wrap sweater by Stephanie Ryan at Stitch Diva. Here’s a link to mine on Rav: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/magicatt/butterfly-wrap
and here’s the one at Stitch Diva: http://www.stitchdiva.com/ProductInfo.aspx?productid=SDS-030

  7. Oh boy, let’s see. I loved the movies The Station Agent and American Splendor, both are fantastic. And you can’t go wrong with those silly Brits in Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.
Happy Ravel-versary! I’ll see you over at the Mystery Shawl group.

  8. Sleepless in Seattle….no matter how many times I have already seen it, i will sit down for another viewing of it and I will cry at the same moments in the movies.

  9. I suggest adding “All About Eve” to your Netflix queue. I can’t get enough of Bette Davis. Or you could go for “Gosford Park,” which is so wonderfully snarky.
    Happy Ravel-versary!

  10. You should have Layer Cake in your Netflix Queue–it’s your boyfriend in an almost-funny sort-of crime caper. It’s got a dark edge, though, and I think it’s some excellent acting from him and Colm Meaney. 😀
Also, did you make it to MA S&W? I looked around for you and at one point I thought I saw you, but then the woman turned around and it wasn’t you. If you went, I hope you had a good time! 😀

  11. How about Lost in America with Albert Brooks and Julie something. Laugh out loud stupid. Bev

  12. i just netflixed juno (skipped it when it was in theaters) and loved it…
i also enjoyed sunshine (directed by danny boyle) recently

  13. Congrats! I just saw the movie Attonement and thought it was very good. My favorite knit project was a very basic sock, because that really opened me up to the world of knitting 🙂

  14. I’ve been searching through my Netflix queue to find something good that’s not too new. I really enjoyed Desk Set from 1957, but I have to give a new one of Dear Frankie from 2004.

  15. I don’t think this one has been released on DVD yet (I just saw it at the theater), but check out the documentary “Young At Heart”. It’s about a chorus from Northampton, MA, made up of folks in their 70’s and 80’s (and 90’s!) who sing songs like “Should I Stay or Should I Go” by The Clash. They have toured all over Europe and sell out every local show. Moving and funny and inspiring.

  16. Happy Ravelversary!
There are so many blogs I enjoy reading. I find Pegotty.blogspot.com to be thought-provoking.

  17. Not a movie, but a British TV show, “Vicar of Dibley”, hilarious show about a small British town that suddenly gets a female vicar. Love that British humor.

  18. My favorite lace knit is the Forest Canopy Shawl. It uses about one skein of sock yarn (which seem to accumulate in stash boxes) and the pattern is easy to memorize. The movie recommendation is a bit tough. My Netflix choices usually center around BBC productions and the rest of my family likes to go in and “bump” those to the bottom in favor of kids’ shows and sci-fi horror movies. I enjoyed “Snowcake” with Alan Rickman. It was a little bit quirky.

  19. How about “M” with a very young Peter Lorre as a serial murderer. It’s by Fritz Lang and is in German with subtitles from 1931. A truly amazing movie and about as eerie as can be.
I also recommend “The More the Merrier” which is a great romantic comedy from the second world war era that has the housing shortage in D.C. as the facilitator of much humor. Joel McCrae and Jean Arthur star.
    Happy Ravelversary!

  20. Happy Ravelversary!
I’ve recently discovered http://www.assemblage.typepad.com/ “Assemblage”. I really enjoy her projects and photos. (Also she’s got a rockin’ first name!)
My favortite thing(s) I’ve ever crafted are my gardens. They give me joy year after year.
To add to your Netflix queue: “Being John Malkovitch” if you haven’t seen it yet.

  21. Happy Ravelversary!
You should add ‘Lars and the Real Girl’ to your Netflix. If you watch TV shows, ‘Wonderfalls’ is good.

  22. Does it surprise anyone that I’d recommend KITTEN WITH A WHIP? It’s a classic youth gone wrong film from 1964. Ann Margret is the Rebel Without Flaws! to John Forsythe’s Victim Without A Clue.
The 1959 Lana Turner version of IMITATION OF LIFE if you’ve been storing up the tears and need to let them ALL out.
    Happy Ravelversary!

  23. My favourite item is almost always what’s on my needles at the moment — I must be a process knitter, though I do love wearing and giving away my knits.
I’m going through a shawl phase right now. Finished a Swallowtail and a Kiri (so easy, so quick, and totally recommended), and I hope to finish Icarus this week (so beautiful, and the Malabrigo Laceweight is a delight on the needles.)
For movies — if you haven’t seen Enchanted, I’d totally recommend it. So much fun, and better than I’d expected.

  24. HAPPY RAVEL-VERSARY!
Two movies I can recommend starring one of my favorite actors, Peter Dinklage is:
    The Station Agent and
    Death at a Funeral.
A favorite blog would be my friend Stacey of Sheep in the City. If you go there be careful she is an evil enabler. Here is the address:
    http://www.sheepinthecity.prettyposies.com/
    Enjoy!

  25. My personal all-time favorite: Dangerous Liasons. The perfect trifecta of story, acting, and eye candy. Watched last night and loved it: 1943’s Heaven Can Wait. I am HUGELY into movies and can recommend stuff from any genre or time period. 🙂 Thanks for such a fun contest!

  26. Happy Ravel-versary!
My suggestion for your Netflix queue: Children of Heaven, by Majid Majidi (original title: Bacheha-ye Aseman) – it is a truly delightful and uplifting movie. I don’t know if you appreciate that kind of movies (I love Iranian movies, so I may be a bit biaised), but it would be a good one for those times when you are looking for something different. Oh, and I just remembered a detail: it’s totally unrelated to the story, but there’s a scene in this movie where the characters are winding yarn!
If ever you see it, let me know how you liked it!

  27. Whoohoo!
Four movies: Narnia, Remember the Titans, Miracle, and Bend it Like Beckham (which you probably saw, but if you didn’t… see it!) As you can see I’m revisiting childhood when I’m not going for the total feel-good ending! Oh, and Billy Elliot. That’s 5. That one’s worth watching for the accents alone, but it rocks.

  28. I have to say that I love the banner at the top of your page!
So for my recommendation, I’m recommending a TV show, the new series of Doctor Who. I have become so smitten with it!

  29. The most recent movie I watched was P.S. I Love You. It started off really slowly, but got better toward the end.

  30. just saw “across the universe”. i highly recommend it. love the beatles, anyway. the songs are part of the story. absolutely done well.

  31. Any movie with Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn – Philadelphia Story or Bringing up Baby are great classics – summer romantic comedy fun!

  32. Happy ravel-versary!! I’m going old-school for a movie recommendation. Highly recommend it if you’ve never seen it, and recommend a second viewing if you have seen it: Cinema Paradiso. It’s an Italian film and I know subtitles don’t make for a good knitting-while-viewing movie, but it is so worth it!
(I will also second the reco for Juno, which you can knit while viewing!)

  33. congrats on one year!! Hmm, for good movies. Well a new one is PS I Love You. But for good older classics, Practical Magic , Better Off Dead, Double Jeopardy, Mall Rats ….just a few!

  34. Happy ravelversary!
I love old Woody Allen movies. My favorite is Sleeper. I laugh every time I watch it.

  35. Congrats on the anniversary!
For your Netflix – The Day the Earth Stood Still. Classic sf film with Michael Rennie and Patricia Neal, with a message we all need today!
    teabird / ravelry

  36. Congrats on a year
If you’ve never seen Hitchcock’s Man Who Knew Too Much, it’s interesting to watch both the 1934 version and the 1950’s version – both made by Hitchcock.

  37. You should definitely check out the German film ‘The Life of Others’–I think you would really, really love it. And happy Ravel-versary!:)

  38. Happy Ravel-versary.
Sydney Pollack just died. If you never saw Toosie, it’s lots of fun.

  39. Looks like I’m late to the party.
    Congratulations!
My movie suggestion is Bananas. It’s really funny.

  40. I love the musical version of Hairspray. It’s really wonderful.
    And happy year on Ravelry!

  41. Congrats on your first Ravel-anniversary. You asked for my favourite movie… definitely Kill Bill 1 and 2. Uma Thurman is also a knitter…LOL! My favourite pattern (at the moment) is the horizontal cable sock, am working on my third pair. You can find it @ Lansingerland’s Design page on Ravelry

  42. Happy Ravelversary!
I think my favourite item I’ve ever crafted is (somewhat oddly), not a knitting project. It’s a stocking I made for my mom for Christmas a few years ago – a very simple felt stocking, with a tree sewn onto it (decorated with a few beads) and rabbit fur around the top. It was a last-minute project, started on the 23rd which doesn’t leave a lot of time if you’re doing all the sewing by hand. While it was definitely not the most spectacular thing I’ve ever made, my mom had never had a stocking of her own before.

  43. A movie to add to your queue: Lars and the Real Girl. We loved it. The premise sounds odd at first, but there’s MUCH more to the story than that. It’s become one of my fav movies and Ryan Gosling is amazing.

  44. For movies, I’d recommend Terry Gilliam’s Brazil. Mind you, I don’t know anything about your movie tastes, so if a chillingly dark comedy isn’t your thing, ignore this suggestion.
Yarnie project I’m proudest of at the moment has no link or photo quite yet: it’s my first actual handspun yarn (as opposed to spinning up the fibre that came with my spindle starter kit). I’m in love with it not only because I made it and it’s just what I wanted, but it also represents a brand new skill, and it also represents many more hours of joy when I make something from it.

  45. Hope I’m not too late!
Netflix Queue: If you haven’t seen it already, you need to see The Notebook. It’s SO amazing, I balled my eyes out through the whole thing.
If you’re into satire, you should take a hop over to the blog “Stuff White People Like” (http://stuffwhitepeoplelike.wordpress.com). I think it’s hilarious personally.
My favorite thing that I’ve made (so far) is the Homer Eyeglasses holder I made for my Dad for his birthday. Link to it on my Ravelry is here: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/dathanas/muppet-glasses-holder-2

  46. Happy Ravel-vesary. Add National Treasure II to your queue. It is a fun action flick. That is our latest to watch.

  47. Happy Ravelversary! I just watched “Death at a Funeral” last night and couldn’t stop laughing. I also saw “Cloverfield” this weekend and was sorry I didn’t get a chance to see it in theaters.

  48. yay ravelry!
i recommend:”The Uninvited”, a very old black and white, spooky movie about ghosts. The lack of background music makes it more scary!

  49. You should watch “Me and You and Everyone We Know” a delightful indie film by Miranda July OR “The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters” a great, great documentary about (of all things) video gamers.
and I am a brand new knitter. My most celebrated project has been the “nacho” my daughter requested. It is not the most glorious thing (a little garish even)…but I learned a ton of new techniques and she adores it. (link: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Hutton/ruby)
Take care, Hutton (ravelry id: Hutton)

  50. To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar.
The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.
Both are simply hilarious, though in completely different ways.
    Happy Ravelversary!

  51. Here are two for your queue:
After Hours: an oldy-but-goody from the 80s–a guy goes out for coffee & his life is forever changed! talk about going-lightly (not)
Withnail & I: same era, only from the UK. 2 down-on-their luck actors in 1969 London…the Richard E Grant character drinks lighter fluid…you must see to believe!

  52. Happy Ravelversary!
Add the Firefly series to your Netflix queue. Great series–very disappointing that it only lasted a season.

  53. I’ve been watching Prime Suspect seasons on netflix, and they’re awesome, if you like helen mirren and crime.
    Happy ravelversary!

  54. I’ll leave a film (Ok sort of a mini series) – I’ve just seen the BBC version of Pride and Prejudice for the first time recently. Well worth a go. Happy Ravelversary!

  55. I think you should queue Juno. Came over from Ravelry–can you believe its been a year already? thanks for a great contest!

  56. I’m a huge fan of foreign films…Life is Beautiful (Italian), A Very Long Engagement, and Look at Me are all high up on my list.
    Enjoy!

  57. Happy Ravel-versary! I have a couple of months to go, but thought I’d recommend the film Babette’s Feast. That would make a foodie out of anyone!

  58. Waking Ned Devine is a fantastic Irish film (meaning it takes place in Ireland, not sure where it was made.) Funny as anything I have ever seen and beautiful at the same time.

  59. Happy Ravel-versary! Quite an exciting community 🙂 Got to say that my favorite hand-made item ever is http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2311/2262047944_9d3bd0b1e7_o.jpg
Even though it took two froggings of the yoke! My DSpouse designed it when I told him I wanted to knit for him, and it took about three months (and a lot of long car rides together).
Thanks for offering the contest! Whee!

  60. Happy one year on Ravelry! I joined about this time a year ago, and what a year it’s been. Ravelry is sweet. =) Have you seen the new Indiana Jones movie yet? I recommend it highly. The plot was a little silly, but the action and craziness and adventure was as good as ever, Harrison Ford is still smokin’, and I really, really enjoyed it. Communism!
