Just before Thanksgiving I visited my stylist, Em. We talked about the Silver Locks Project and how to proceed. At this point, it’s getting routine: cut, grow, cut, grow until the blonde is gone.
Em cut a bit more than two inches, making my hair shorter than it has been in a long time. Even five weeks after that cut, it is still too short to twist in back the way I like. Still, we got a lot of blonde off my head with that cut. In fact, Em thinks the next cut (probably in February or March) might be the one that removes all of the blonde. My original math said October 2014, but I guess if I go short enough, I can have all silver sooner!
Every now and then I get what I perceive to be an underhanded criticism about growing out the silver, but I just smile and think of the hair coloring money in my bank account and my love of this new color. Neal and my mom–the two people who would be most brutally honest with me–are both pleased with it, and most importantly, I’m pleased.
I like this picture because it shows how much of my dark hair is left. Before I started this project, I had forgotten just how raven black my hair was pre-coloring. I’ve fallen in love with the color!

You are lovely!
I love it! I really feel that 90% of the time, nature really does know best what suits us. I’m still mostly dark, but have such an array of lovely silver strands that make my hair shine and I’m excited to see where it goes over time!
Love them! I got some negative comments when I first started my project, too, but now when I see pictures of myself with the dye job, it looks so strange. My husband commented on one the other day that it looked like I had an animal curled up on my head, and when it jumped off I’d look like me again.
It’s looking great! Don’t you hate those passive aggressive types? Ugh! But you know what’s best and if Neal and your mom love it, too, then I’d say it’s as perfect as you’re going to get.
If you’re happy and the people around you are happy it matters not what other think. Your hair has gorgeous natural color. With my added gray I’ve had to change some of my wardrobe colors, as my coloring has changed. Black still works, thank goodness! 🙂
I love it–you’ve got a gorgeous silver color! And ignore anybody who suggests anything else, they are just brainwashed by society’s fear of gray hair. This project inspires me.
I think you know that I find your color amazing.
Sofie, who has chosen silver, while lacking a single strand naturally, gets overtly negative comments from strangers all the time. For her it has been an interesting study in our society’s perception of grey hair, particularly in women. I’m proud of her that she doesn’t let these comments bother her, but finds them humorous.
Personally I think you, blessed with a magnificent silver naturally, and Sofie with her artificial silver, each wear the color beautifully.
I find it odd that strangers will point out the few strands of very bright silver I have. My hair is very dark brown so the greys show up quite brightly. I’m 28 so I know I’m rather “young” for them to show up but sheesh, people. I get it! I have grey hairs. 😉
I think the silver locks look terrific on you! Happy New Year!
It’s fun to look back at all the pictures you took.
I am not ready to go there yet (and am not sure I’ll get “good silver”)but I surely applaud you for doing this. You look mahvelous!
Your silver locks are lovely! I am so jealous. I have bland, steely gray hair, so I continue to sport any number of wacky colors.
As a fellow “silver-sister” I say HURRAY! It looks beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. (And you will never regret it.) XOXO
Hi Bev! Great to see your blog again. I LOVE your hair!!! It’s beautiful and you’ll like how healthy it is without all the (boxed) colo.
