"The true secret of happiness lies in taking a genuine interest in all the details of daily life." —William Morris
I am enjoying our laundry line immensely. I figure that in the last two weeks, I’ve hung out at least a dozen loads of laundry, saving nearly $5.* While that may not seem like much, think of it in terms of energy savings, too.
I spent much of the last two days working on getting my office in better shape. It still looks like a craft store blew up in there, but I did pull a special basket out of the closet, where it had been holding several skeins of Cascade 220. When I was growing up, my mom always used this basket to hold clothespins. It belonged to her grandmother before that, so I’m guessing the basket is at least 75 years old, if not older. Each time I pulled a clothespin from the plastic bag they came in, I thought of this basket, and yesterday, I put it back to its earlier use. That, my friends, is the kind of detail that leads to true happiness for me.
*This site uses 2007 costs of energy, so the savings is likely to be even higher!
ooh — memories of the clothes line, pins and squishy back yard under my feet.. and struggling to reach it when it wasn’t completely laden with clothing (I was little). hah.. you might make me end up writing personal memoir all summer but at the very least thank you for sparking reminiscence of happy summertime memories!
I really, really want a clothes line ( I have never called it a laundry line). The funny part is that I used hate having to hang clothes out on the line as a kid.
And clothes smell so wonderful right off the clothesline, no?
I love connections like that – thinking of the women who came before you and using the same objects they used. Wonderful!
I used to hang clothes on a line at my old house. I know I saved money and energy. I still try to hang a few things ( I don’t have any place for an outdoor line), mostly because I don’t like to put everything in the dryer. I’ve been cleaning my office too! I guess the end of the school year is a signal for summer cleaning.
We currently have a clothes line and hanging up the laundry to dry is my favorite chore. I had been leaving my pins on the line, but they are getting quickly worn. I love idea of a little basket to hold them. How wonderful that yours is a family heirloom!
Too bad I have no place to hang my clothes 🙁 But thanks for the link to the simple dollar site! I can’t wait to peruse it later.
